The mention of Bataan rings a memorable chord in the heart of every Filipino. It is today a symbol of democracy and freedom, having been the last fortress for Filipino and American soldiers against the invading Japanese forces until it fell captive to Japan on April 9, 1942. Every year on April 9 the nation commemorates these historical events with special Bataan Day Function. The ceremonies begin at daybreak at the foot of the "cross of valor" on top of Mt.Samat with the arrival by helicopter of the President of the Philippines. It was also favoured province of Ex President Marcos, who had his holiday residence at Mariveles and during his presidency, much growth and development came to the region.
